ISO and the International Mobile Satellite Organization (IMSO) have recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) which was approved at the Twentieth Session of the IMSO Assembly held from 29 September to 3 October 2008.
ISO and IMSO have many complementary activities serving the broadest interests of safety at sea, safe navigation and the promotion of safe and efficient maritime transport. The two organizations agreed to establish and maintain cooperation and to exchange information and documentation to keep each other fully informed of their activities and programmes of work in fields of mutual interest, including maritime communications for maritime safety and efficiency of navigation. One of the factors that has encouraged IMSO to cooperate with ISO is the latter's development of standards for various aspects of maritime security, which is complementary to its own specialized work. ISO is the world's largest developer of voluntary International Standards for business, government and society with a current porfolio of more than 17 400 documents and a membership of the national standards institutes of 157 countries. IMSO is an inter-governmental organization, with 93 member states, responsible for overseeing public interest in the provision of maritime mobile satellite services for the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) and is the Coordinator of the Long Range Identification and Tracking of Ships (LRIT), appointed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
